“Cultivated primarily from our estate vines, this 100% cabernet sauvignon is the cornerstone of our portfolio. Named after our daughter, the Cuvee Claire is allowed to work its magic slowly, which results in a complex, elegant wine that represents the best of Napa Valley.” – William Ballentine, Winemaker
Winemaker’s Notes 2011
Dark ruby in color, the 2011 opens with notes of black cherry, red currants and leather, which lead into earthy notes of sage, rosemary and baking spices. The aromas echo on the palate with hints of black pepper and juniper. The wine is smooth and full with soft tannins, balanced acidity and an elegant finish.
2011 was a nerve-racking vintage for growers and winemakers alike. It started off with a very wet winter with rains that continued to fall throughout the spring. Rains during a delayed fruit set caused shatter in the vineyards; which lead to incredibly low yields. The remaining fruit was blessed with an Indian summer to ripen. 2011 may have yielded much less than average harvests, but produced some truly elegant wines.
